Golden Larch

I just thought I would share this image of the Larches in Chopwell Wood. Often in the UK when people think of conifers they think of evergreen trees, but the larches needles turn gold and they shed them, as has now happened days after this picture was taken in the high winds here.
While they look attractive they don’t support much in the way of wildlife, not in this wood anyway, as they are an introduction to this habitat.

We have Larch here as well. The natives call it "Hack" for hackmatack..I think another name for it here is tamarac. I have one on my property-the top has been dead since I moved in 8 years ago. The top 20 feet sticks up like a spire and is a frequent perch for birds! Clutching the very tip.

The top has withstood winds in excess of 100 mph!

A local saying is that we can expect snow anytime when the needles of the "hack" drop.
